If anything I see this team as one of those looney toon body builder characters where the upper body is buffed like Conan the Barbarian, and the lower body are skinny chicken legs. So if they do somehow miss the playoffs or are one and done because of the defense, it shouldn't be all that surprising the season ends like that, unlike the surprise of 2010's implosion.
People sure are locked in on this defense sucking this year. Golden and the players flat out said they are playing pure vanilla in the pre-season, and not game planning for anyone. PS is not about winning the game, it is about player evaluation and seeing if they can win their one-on-ones. We haven't even seen CTB or Dax yet this season. I'm not ready to say they will suck yet because of one PS game.

Back from injury Turner and Hill who started less than 30% of our games in 2024
Jenkins and Jackson no longer rookies
Looks a lot different to me
I get the urge for fans to trash our defense, they deserve it, but to say it is the same team we fielded for 17 games in 2024 is BS.
Banking on a bunch of rookies and a couple guys back from injury that we have no idea if they are good or not.
Got it.

I am saying they suck because of their preseason performance, I am saying they suck because the personel is pretty much the exact same. Safety was awful last year, they did nothing to address it. Lineback was awful last year, they are counting on a third round rookie to save the position group. Edge and overall pass rush was bad. We are counting on another rookie to improve it exponentially. Corner was bad at times last year, no upgrade.
Sorry, but that doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies.

New coach is good at coaching younger players. Defense is going to take a leap.
Got it.

You could say the same thing for all of the teams actually. Up until last year, all of the draft picks they “hit on” contributed to a horrible defenses in 2023.
So what is it weezy…? They are bad, or good?
You’re just glossing over the fact that a change in scheme can impact a defense, dramatically. The new DCs got more (a lot) out of the same people that contributed to horrible 2023 defenses.
I hope you are right, but I am not holding my breath.
The Bengals organization must believe that as well, because they are pretty much banking on a new DC to flip this defense around. They didn't do much else to address it.

Yeah I have no idea what to expect from them. My current position is that I am cautiously pessimistic, with hope that Golden will at least turn them around to be opportunistic in getting stops when needed.

Some fans get all warm and fuzzy before the season starts and reality slowly trickles in...
The next step is for the warm and fuzzies???
"Its too early in the season to worry, these losses wont matter they will turn it around, and they are still in it"
But the problem with dismissing early season losses is later in the season when they were one win away from a playoff berth and missed it....because....well well well well....those early season losses.

Those same people were kicking and squealing about the coach making some changes to break that cycle, by having a stronger, more competitive training camp along with starters playing significant reps in preseason games. I guess that some folks wouldn't be happy if they were hung with a new rope.

I'm feeling like we got steal in Fairchild if thats the case line is way better than last season if he is mediocre hes at least as good Cappa was last year. this offense would be a nightmare for the 2000 Ravens if line is elite or close to it as well

Easy now, we said 4 of 5 spots appear to be settled, not by elite personnel or even close to it, but just by qualified players.

Nor did they scour the earth for a new DC. There were proven DCs who'd just been dismissed from head coaching jobs available. As soon as I saw Golden's name I knew he'd be the guy. He's been here before. He's familiar... And he's no threat to Zac Taylor. Maybe he'll do great, but I thought it was a lazy hire.

That’s fine, please don’t. I’m not expecting bottom 5 to top 5. But I don’t think moving up to 16-20 is out of the question either. I believe the run defense will be better with Slayton and Demetrius coming on. We also have two year two DTs, that should improve. Simply put, being in better early down and distances will pay dividends.
The OL is really my biggest concern. Even with a horrid defense last year, the bengals were 5 unlucky bounces going their way to lose 5 games. If 9 gets hurt, the season is toast.
You can win a Super Bowl with a bad defense (colts, saints and giants did).
Defense could be a problem, OL is the elephant in the room.
