Deja vu?

Except it's not $6.3m. It's $4.8m, because the $1.5m is already a sunk cost that money is already spent and you could say $1.5m is a lot to justify for a guy to start on someone else's team in today's NFL.

And it's not even $4.8m really, it's more like ~$4m, because someone still has to take his roster space and that person is going to make at least $840k so that's money already spent as well.

But it's not even about the savings. How would cutting Karras improve the 2025 Bengals at this point in the offseason?
If this was before Free Agency started and we have a whole slew of people who we could sign with extra cap space, then you have a case to be made.
If we were expecting to be 5-12 and 2025 didn't matter so we're already looking towards 2026, then you have a case to be made.
If we had only like $1m in cap space and we were desperate to make some more room, then you have a case to be made.

But none of those apply to the Bengals right now so what case can be made that, while we're already sitting on ~$30m in cap space and already no inclinations towards signing someone right now, worsening our roster (even if it's just by worsening our depth) by cutting Karras right now improves the Bengals chances at winning in 2025?

If Matt and Seth are good enough to replace Karras. Then, yes I would have no problem with cutting karras.

If neither one are capable of replacing Karras; then yes I have problem with them cutting Karras.

From what I'm reading about lee and McLaughlin is that the FO and coaching staff are very high on both players. Which suggests to me a Karras cut isn't out of the realm of reality(I would agree that its unlikely).
I would also  doubt they would risk either Lee or Mclaughlin to waivers considering both are candidates to fill the Center role long term and are team friendly deals.

Karras is paid $6.1M to be the starting Center, I'll bet you anything that he remains the starting Center this season. (unless he suffers an untimely injury, of course)

But my bigger point is that the Bengals coaching staff isn't so stupid to disrupt multiple positions in a misguided effort to fix one.

Move Karras to RG then. At least see if he is an upgrade. Upgrade center and guard with 1 move if you have a young center you like.

We do need options for Karras eventual replacement so I’d like to keep both Lee and McLaughlin.

WR or TE are the only positions we seem deep enough to trade. Not sure we have the value there to really account for much. I had wondered if Volson may have more value for a run heavy team as he is a good run blocker?

Sure. But I dont think they want to trade him. I have feeling they want to trade Hudson but doesnt seem like there is alot of value there.

sounds like we might have 3 centers... but not clear that any of them are a better choice at guard (which is surprising)

I do wish Lee or Seth were healthy earlier so we could get a better sense of there capabilities.
Another position I thought of is DE. We are reasonably deep there and assuming Trey does get signed we may have some trade value there for a player for player trade.

And this person is reasonably deep in cars.

There were 94 players in the NFL last year who got at least 5.0 sacks.

Nobody is going to be clamoring after Myles Murphy (0.0 sacks in 2024), Cedric Johnson (1.0 sacks in 2024), Isaiah Thomas (0.0 sacks in 2024), Raymond Johnson III (0.0 sacks in 2024), or Cam Sample (0.0 sacks in 2024).

The fact that we have almost certainly the worst DE room in the NFL if Trey Hendrickson is sitting out is why nobody wants our "depth". The same reasoning that tells you people who live in nice subdivisions don't go to the yard sales in trailer parks.

Okay fair enough. Although Sample was hurt all year. I was thinking Murphy might have some value as former 1st rd pick. But are probably right. Im still living in trading David "Can't tackle" Jones for Reggie Nelson world.

I just can't stand the "we'll pick someone up on cut down day" crowd because that never happens. A player for player swap seems the only way we might add some very late talent.
