When we traded for him, I knew he was an elite defender, but in the back of my mind I thought, "But does that REALLY matter? All we really need over there is someone who can play decently, like Sal Stewart."
And I'm still not sure what impact elite defense really has on a game, but man, it has been fun to watch him at 3B these last few weeks.
He is here for the long haul and we have committed to him, so this will be our reality for the next 4 years at least. If his bat can just be moderately below average, I'll be happy.
Unfortunately, so far with the Reds, he has remained one of the worst hitters in baseball (.225/.262/.325/.587 OPS+ of 58). For the entire year, he is last in the majors in SLG, OPS and 4th worst in OBP among qualified hitters.
