Yeah, Patrick is a good pass protector that is an upgrade over what we saw from Cappa last year. Patrick is proven and I have high expectations for Fairchild who was a great pass protector at Georgia as well.

True, but... 1) The Saints & Packers had much better running games and other teams could pin their ears back less. Guys will always rate out lower here because our O is one dimensional and predictable. 2) He gets injured a lot 3) Penalties are a problem. Per PFF: Player, Overall, Pass, Run; Cappa: 50.7; 39.7, 54.9 ------------- Volson: 59.3, 49.4, 65.6 Ford: 50.6, 50.2, 49.8 Karras: 64.1; 78.0; 54.9 -------- Patrick: 64.6; 60.3, 66.3 -------------- Scherff: 64.7, 74.5, 57.3 Risner: 67.0, 76.2, 57.4 Hernandez: 69.3, 74.2, 66.0 Jenkins: 75.4, 75.8, 74.3 Player, Snaps, Sacks, Hit, Pressures, Pen Cappa; 1,132, 8, 7, 51, 2 ------------ Volson; 984, 6, 10, 43, 8 Ford: 688, 5, 8, 37, 3 Karras: 1,136, 2, 6, 23, 3 ----------- Patrick: 562, 0, 0, 10, 6 ---------- Scherff: 1,013; 0, 1, 17, 2 Risner: 537, 0, 1, 16, 0 Hernandez: 280, 0, 0, 8, 2 Jenkins: 738, 4, 1, 17, 4 If he can stay healthy, it is an upgrade, though. He'd be out best run blocking IOL. Better than Risner & Scherff as a run blocker, but not in pass pro. I know zeeo about scheme fit. So maybe that DQ's some guys. But a starter quality guy at a position of need, who would be an upgrade over what we have, for $4-$7 mil, seems like a worthwhile investment to me. And likely short term to boot. If someone has a better option at a different spot (S?), I'd love to hear it.

I don't get the hostility towards him: scheme/team/whatever, 1 sack given up every 550ish pass blocking snaps (which is around an entire season) is awesome, hell, even three times that amount is not bad. We don't know how he will be with us (and with the injury now, it's even more of a question mark), but the numbers don't lie.

True, don't understand why people dislike Lucas Patrick so much. I know people have their names that they wanted, but he is a clear upgrade over what we saw from Cappa last year as far as play on the field lately. BTW, heard the injury wasn't bad and he is out there today which is great news. ![]()

I know people have their names that they wanted, but he is a clear upgrade over It's not so much "hate" towards the guy as much as realistically acknowledging who he is. He's a career backup, coming off of a season where he finished the season rated as the 79th/136 Guards in pass protection. (that's only the 41st percentile, btw). He's heading into his 9th year in the league and still has never grabbed and held the starter spot, it's not like he's going to all of a sudden step in and start dominating. The truth is that the team is betting on new coaching and draft picks to patch the OL by, they as usual, did the very least they could do to fill an open spot after cutting Cappa. So nobody hating on Patrick, just tempering the expectations of some that he might be "much better than what we had", and casting a little shade toward the team management for their roster building methodology. Hell, I know that Patrick has to be a smart guy, he played and graduated from Duke Univ. I'm hoping for the best out of him, just not expecting anything spectacular. ![]() Volson is meh, but I like him, and he has far exceeded my expectations -Frank Booth 1/9/23

I don't think it's hostility or dislike so much as a lack of excitement and belief that he's a solution. I think it feeds into yet another step in a long line of steps that show the Bengals don't financially value IOL. He's a guy heading into his age 32 season who signed for 1yr/$2.1m which makes him the 57th highest paid G in the NFL in 2025. If he were as great as just the sack numbers suggest, he would have signed for both more years and money. This is a league that is desperate for linemen, one where Alex Cappa was terrible and still got 2yr/$11m. To me he's basically another John Jerry... or maybe an older XSF. ____________________________________________________________

I know people have their names that they wanted, but he is a clear upgrade over Because he only played about half a season's worth of snaps (562) last year. From looking online, he ended up starting 10 games primarily because of injuries to the New Orleans OL, not because he was the planned starter upon signing. And he covered primarily LG last year, but being asked to play RG on the Bengals. Year before that, full-time starter but at C, not OG. Year before that (2022), only 269 offensive snaps played, splitting about equal time between LG and RG in those limited snaps before going down to a toe injury that knocked him out the rest of the season. Year before that (2021), full time starter but primarily at C again, not OG. He hasn't played a heavy amount of RG snaps since 2020 - five years ago. There's understandable concern that he's 1) not really going to play at his best position (which is probably C), and 2) may not be durable enough to hold up at OG for a full season, resulting still in the likes of Ford or Volson filling in, which not many really would be happy to see. I think most see/saw Patrick as really what they would prefer as the 6th OL or what Cody Ford has been serving, not what we really want in a planned full-season starter at RG.

barring a major injury, I don't see the team signing another offensive lineman. They seem happy with what they've got
It's next season and I'm hopeful ![]()
