Trey Hendrickson Update
Trey still has at least 3 years of 10+ sacks in him.

Take it to the bank.  Mellow

I mean if Stewart absolutely balls out and gets an unrealistic 10 sacks (last year the rookie sack leader was at 8.5 and second place was at 6.0... the only rookie to have at least 10 sacks in the last 5 years was Micah Parsons in 2021), that would still put him 7.5 shy of Hendrickson's last two years totals and we already were talking about how badly we needed a decent second DE to go with Hendrickson.

So you'd swap out an All-Pro DE for a lesser DE, and then still have the same need at DE #2 in 2026 that we had in 2024.

Yep, and in 2026 we have another chance to draft a DE in the 1st, and/or pick one up in free agency.  You act like Hendrickson is just going to continue to play at the same level over the next three years. History says otherwise. If he were 25, I wouldn't be making this argument. He's not. He's going to slow down. Father time beats all. That is why he is so desperate for guarantees. He knows it, the Bengals know it.

I don't dsisagree, so how much do 10 sack guy gets paid versus 17.5 sack guys is the question the FO has to determine, as 30 + sacks 52.5 sacks is a huge downward trend,

On to 2025, let's save the drama for the off season.

You’d have more of an argument if we didn’t just see 30 year old Watt and 29 year old Garrett get exactly the guarantees Trey wants. It’s unreasonable to expect him to settle for less.

Jessie Bates left the Bengals and that makes me sad!

For me, the 10(+/-) is more in year 3 and beyond. I'd still expect mid teens for the next 2 years.

Well there you go, when you start using Cleveland as an example of doing things right.... well..... Ninja As for Watt, he's already declining from what he was. Pittsburgh will regret that deal as well.

Yeah, Pittsburgh and Cleveland know nothing about building good defenses. Ninja

I hope we sign and he gets 20 sacks in 2024,but no given when he peaks. That is the issue FO has to deal with and why the guaranteed money is such an issue. I think we should offer a deal with a 2 year guararatee and in year 3 low base + roster bonus + per sack incentive. I think that is a very fair compromise for both sides.

If we are only offering a 1 year guarantee, to me that is not enough. But, I do think some of year 2 should also be sack bases, get the sacks and get more dough.

I think it was Shemar or his agent said “they would rather win negotiations than games”. That sums up the Bengals FO

Who cares if it’s not a good contract 3 years from now? For once risk it for Trey being worth it for the next 2 years to win now. This is a bad look for them - they have generational talents like Burrow and Chase but won’t go the extra mile to win while they have them.

You know what, there are defensive teams and there are offensive teams. Very rarely is a team a powerhouse on both sides of the ball. Both Cleveland and Shitsburgh might have great defenses this year, but both will struggle to put points on the board. Meanwhile, we have an offensive powerhouse, and people complain because we don't have a top 5 defense.  Shocked

And we have a draft and free agency coming before next season.

I think the overwhelming majority of Bengals fans would be content with even a middle of the pack defense. I doubt anyone expects “top 5.”

I'd be super happy with a D ranked 15-20.

The point remains, this team spent a ton of money to have a powerful offense. That means there isn't a lot of money for a powerful defense. Then, people want to give a huge contract to one player at one position instead of filling needs at multiple positions. 44% of the Bengals total salary cap is going to Burrow, Chase and Higgins. Now the team is supposed to give another 100 million to Hendrickson. Who's going to play all the other positions?
