Stewart has huge athletic gifts. He plays hard. But has poor technique (especially hands), and misses a huge amount of tackles (26.9%, I believe). He struggles with the football part to a much greater degree. 

But there are some bright spots. First in FBS in first to pressure time. 5th rated run defender amongst DEs via PFF. 39 pressures. 

And this oiece from Denher compates him to other recent 260+ lb DEs with RAS scores over 9.8. Some busts,,but some hits as well. Many with poor college production.

I mean, I hate the pick. I'd have picked a safer guy (Zabel, Jackson, Starks, Campbell, Emmanwori). If I wanted to gamble, I'd have gambled on a guy with top 10 tape (Johnson). Eben Barron or Simmons would have been better in my book. 

But Stewart is here now. He has huge upside. He just turned 21. He only played in just over 100 true pass set snaps last year. They aligned him inside quite a bit (inside the tackle). He seems to be well liked at A&M and a team guy. He couid bust,,but if he booms.....lookout. 

Were those guys safer picks? Some had low RAS scores. Some had injuries. Some had effort concerns.

Some haven't been drafted yet.

You cannot teach this guy's size, motor, strength, speed etc.

For example, this is not a Jackson Carman type of pick. This guy loves football and wants to be great, unlike Carman who was all talent and but 
not the want. Cannot say this for Shemar Stewart, I am obviously really warming up to the pick after watching film of the guy.

It would also be interesting to find a stat for a player who didn't finish many many plays, at least in sacks, but how many he created for his other defenders. Sacks are beautiful but I guarantee you plenty on this board might like Trey to give up a few if he wreaked havoc on opposing offenses in other ways via playing the run, having the versatility to be moved around more to make offenses account for him,etc. No knock on Trey because he's a warrior and I'm certainly not comparing the two.

We like to blame OL for giving up sacks to QB's that are quite mobile but actually "run into them" more than the sack-masters actually getting them. I have a feeling Stewart is going to make offenses account for him far more than any defender we've had since Geno.

Well he played on a line with other NFL level players and they finished 12th in the SEC on defense. Thats only out of 16 teams. He was a non factor.

I’m starting to warm up to the pick. Watched some tape and he was quite disruptive. I don’t like his missed tackle rate, though. And a lot of the video I watched had him lined up at RDE. Can he play LDE, or is he Trey’s back up plan / rotational guy (I don’t see Trey come off the field often, if at all really)? I foresee a rotation at LDE this year with a heavy dose of Ossai unless they double up and draft another, mid round (L)DE if Stewart can’t play LDE.

I don't know, but hope he can challenge Ossai and Murphy for playing time at LDE.

He is definitely a beast of an athlete, let's hope he is like Parsons and a better sack guy in the NFL than he was in college. I do believe he will be solid against the run day 1 and if so not a liability to be on the field. We all love the sacks, but our run defense was very bad the past 2 years after we lost Reader. Even then, it was not great.

That's a fair point that you make, and a valid one at that. Just look no further than Myles Murphy, who had good production at the college level, and he's struggling to find his footing heading into his 3rd season.

At first I was a little disappointed with the Stewart selection because of his lack of production numbers. However, I must give credit to Synric for posting those videos of Stewart versus Arkansas and Florida. The guy really comes off the snap like he's shot out of a cannon, instantly defeats attempts to block him, and his only fault might be that he was charging too hard to latch onto some very elusive QBs and RBs. Given the day to think about it and absorb some good footage of him in action, I'm really warming up to him being out 1st round pick.

Conversely to the Stewart footage, when I watched similar clips of Murphy at Clemson, it seemed that he was the beneficiary of playing on a loaded front more times than being THE reason it was a loaded front.

Nobody is blaming him. The kid hasn’t played a down so if he gets 11 sacks this season I guess we would be “blaming” Golden for that.
You just seem to want to target only Duke. For sure he has had his fair share of failures and this is a risky pick.

Right or wrong the Bengals coaches scout a lot more than other NFL teams so they have a lot more say in the players who are picked. Their voices are heard and yet you think Duke would take a guy that Golden wasn’t really high on? Like Pally said Golden coached against him so if he didn’t like him they would not have taken him

Ultimately it’s Dukes pick/final say I’m sure but it’s obvious that Gooden had a big impact in them drafting Stewart.
Don’t know why you can’t see that.

I had to go watch some film on him. I just read an outlet that gave Cincy a C grade for the pick, can't remember which one. It said he has the talent but lacks instinctual football skills. 

He's damn sure big and fast! I thought that Green was the more well rounded out of the two, but Green faced lesser competition at Marshal. That may have put Stewart in the drivers seat. I reckon we're gonna find out. I hope to goodness he pans out better than Murphy has thus far.

Someone posted the ND tape.  All you have to do is watch his head.  If he keeps it down, he gets lost.  He wins his rep, but then has to look up and adjust.  

When he keeps his head up from the start he disrupts the play almost every time (unless the play is moving away from him of course).  If they teach him to keep his head from the snap, then we'll see something.
