You do realize Trey is on his 3rd porfessional contract, 1 with Saints and signed as FA with Bengals, then Bengals gave him 1 extension already.
This will be Trey's 4th contract. As for Bengals plans, I don't know other than they had 2 starting DE's late in their careers, Hibbard and Trey so in their opinion they may have felt Murphy (highly ranked by experts) was both a need and BPA.
In retrospect, he has not performed so a bad choice. FA and the draft is filled with teams doing a clean up on aisle 3, every team misses picks.
