DJ Reader wasn't good his rookie season either and their bodies were a lot alike coming out of college. McKinnley was a damn good run 
stopper in college, he can be one in the NFL. But it is Kris Jenkins I think makes the biggest jump this year as a pass rusher.

When it comes to projecting the pass rush success rate of college players to the NFL, pass rush win rate (and the associated stats like true pass rush win rate) is one of the biggest indicators and neither McKinnley nor Jenkins were particularly good pass rushers in college. It's the same reason I didn't like the Murphy selection either.

You're right that McKinnley had a few flashes in his rookie season. I hope he builds on them. But I didn't like either draft pick at the time it was made. 
I'll happily be wrong though!
