Iv seen a lot of posts and conversations on here and X urging us to have a plan on how to build the roster.
I often see ppl jokingly say we have to score 35 a game.
That sounds crazy until you do a quick skim of the roster and realize we have Chase, Burrow, Brown and Tee. To me committing to that means you are taking offense at 17 and it means you’ve alerted your defensive coordinator that that’s the gameplan.
If you are gonna do it then do it. Dont 1/2 ass it. Now if the roster build plan is to draft D and retain what we already have on offense and improve the O in FA that’s fine too.
Personally if anyone cares I’m in the draft D and tweak offense via FA boat. I think we have the roster already to accomplish that but i also respect anyone who wants to just try and score 35 every game.
I wonder where the Bengals are at on this or if they are more in the “Just build the best roster possible” boat.

It's not a game plan that has any chance of success, so for practical purposes, no, it's not a real game plan.
Only 4 teams in the last 20 years (so just 4/640) averaged at least 35.0 points per game. They went 5-4 in the playoffs and none of them won the SB. (3 of the 4 gave up 37+ points in the playoff games they lost.)

I don't get how people don't see the plan.
Overview: The FA class is weak. Therefore big money is best spent on retaining our own stars & good players. Once we do that, shop at the bargain bin for upgrades/depth in FA and nail the draft for most of the rest. And we may have to live with deficiencies at a couple spots.
It is incomplete so far. On both sides. I'd have been more aggressive at G in FA. And maximizing cap space on the Tee/Chase extensions. And have gotten a Burrow restructure done.The first thing was only possible if we did at least one of the others. Both and we could have gone for a bigger FA on D.
But I think the general outline is/has been:
Step 1: Don't let any of your studs leave. Tee & Chase are done. Trey is next and a trade is off the table
Step 2: Retain a lot of your in- house proven talent. BJ Hill at TE, Gesicki at WR4/TE2, Ossai at DE.
Step 3: Bargain outside FA's: Slaton, Burks, Patrick, Perine.
Step 4: Hope the new coaches can help with better drafting and getting more our of the younger guys on the roster.
Now, I think the O was 2 serious G upgrades and another target (TE1 or WR4) away from being elite. TE1 was not an option, and FA WR would be insane after Chase & Tee. That has to be draft. Would love another G before the draft.

The OP thought process has some merit. If the offense will likely score 30+ points, then 2 things have to happen with the defense. Great run defense on 1st and 2nd down so teams can't keep our offense on the field. The 2nd is a ferocious pass rush that can be generated with only 4 guys in 3rd and long or when teams have to pass to catch up.
Sadly our defense could do neither last year, maybe that is why our defense lost us at least 5 games.

The Bengals were not close to averaging 35 a game last year. They were at 27.8 (#6 in the NFL) The top scoring offense in the NFL last year was the Lions at 33.2 points per game. To get to 35 a game the Bengals offense would need to average one additional TD per game. That means no more turds like the Patriots game. Honestly, I dont see the offense being capable of doing this

That is a novel idea, but which 6 defenders currently on the roster are we upgrading with rookie replacements? (I'm just saying that you have to have a place to put them on the roster)

IMO, I honestly don't think the Bengals are taking any kind of approach to "roster building".
They have no plan. Joe came out and said to sign Tee, Jamar, Mike G, etc. and so the Bengals are doing it.
Which is good (I guess). You want to make your QB happy. But im not going to sit here and act like the Bengals have any kind of plan when it comes to roster building.

To be clear I am NOT throwing shade at Burrow, but to be brutally honest, he spoke up and got what he wanted. If the defense continues to struggle and it falls on Joe and those guys to win it every game, he's got to own (at least to some degree) that situation is coming about as a result of the pressure he put on this franchise.
Now, I am not saying that is a bad thing. I think Joe is the kind of guy who backs away from no challenge, but the table is set for next season in terms of the impact players we will have on D, there's probably no savior coming over on that side of the ball.
Nor does that fact absolve the franchise of the whiffs they've made on picks or bad decisions, I'm just saying that Joe put his foot down and there are consequences to that, both good and bad.

This made me think of the Greatest Show on Turf, so I wanted to look up their offensive and defensive rankings during that time.
When they won the Super Bowl, they were 1st in Points For, 4th in Points Allowed.
The following year, they were 1st in Points For again, but 31st in Points Allowed. They made the playoffs but lost to the Saints in the WC.
The year after that when they went to another Super Bowl, 1st in Points For yet again, 7th in Points Allowed.
They only went back to the playoffs one more time in that era, 2 seasons after their last Super Bowl. They were 2nd in Points For but 17th in Points Allowed. They lost to the Panthers in the divisional round. They did not play in the WC because they had a 1st round bye.
So needless to say, defense is still important.
Being a dominant offense for sure will get you to the playoffs, but defense is hugely important to actually get to (and win) the Super Bowl.
And while a team may not be required to be Top 10, they need timely defense in the playoffs with turnovers and key stops.
We haven't seen Golden as DC in the NFL, and college defense really isn't a great indicator because certain teams always get way better recruits and play weaker schools/conferences. I will be curious to see how Golden's defensive playcalling holds up against NFL talent.
They need to add at least two impactful defensive players in the draft since they're likely done in FA and the defense is not markedly improved from a player perspective. The offense is also not improved, but they should still be really good since they didn't have any impactful losses in FA.

I think Burrow made the right call. We were never going to sign adequate players that could've made up any possible loss of Higgins. If we gave the league average 1st year cap % on our deals we would've have 28 mil more in cap space. That's average nothing crazy that's Zeitler and Hendrickson and call it a day.
As far as going all in on offense I think/hope that may be the Bengals plan. 6 picks and we've only signed backup guards. I think we plan to double dip at that position and I think with a strong RB class we may go there late. So 3 picks offense and 3 Defense. I also think we probably try and trade back at some point to pick up any extra pick. But if it's not in the 1st rd I hope they avoid it on day 2 I'm worried and a IOL run in the 2nd before our pick.
