The comments that are being made.. whatever happened at the combine, the owner’s meetings and what was said yesterday… I don’t spare my opinions.
This is all marketing 101 by going public. He is attempting to win the PR battle knowing the team will likely say little. I will always look at from both sides, I understand Trey's career is windiing down and he wants one last big pay day. I understand the team is paying him close to 20 million in 2025 if you factor in the contract upfront bonus. That is well believe his market value.
The answer is usually somewhere in the middle, but it seems Trey has no intention of giving at all.

I agree with you. Thing is, someone needs to let Trey know that 1) it's not hard to win a PR battle with the Bengals 2) he is NOT going to out stubborn the Bengals either. Bengals will "win" this fight even if it means both Cincinnati and Trey loses.

Now Trey has moved th threats. I am not sure this tactic will get the Bengals to make a better offer, in fact it may lead to them digging in deeper.

It appears to me it is Trey's camp that said no and now they are hoping the FO blinks.
I hope they work it out. I also understand the team's position, he is 31 years old and a limited future (age). Trey's agent screwed up with last contract, not the Bengals. Now he seems to expect the Bengals to repay him because he as underpaid as he over performed. It does not work that way, nit just with us but any team.
I keep referencing Watt who also wants an extension (new deal) and like Trey is on final year of his conract. Do any fans think they are going to give Watt 40 million. year in 2025, 2026 and 2027? I say no way.
1. That's not even close to what i was saying.
2. If the offer was a lowball, it IS the FO fault.
3. Actually, it does work that way most of the time. They knew they got him at a bargain, he over-performed and they're not willing to say "well done, here's a little thanks". Their unwillingness most likely has more to do with his age.
4. If they don't pay Watt what Garrett is making, they'll be damn close.
Your post was a little confusing because it fit my previous post better than the one you responded to where i simply said they probably offered him less than he believed he was worth, what the current market is and guessed what they may have actually offered.

The one comment from Trey that irks me is this: "Hendrickson: If I sat here with four sacks, they'd want a little (money) back."
If he sat here with four sacks, he and his agent would be insisting the Bengals front office sticks with the contract already signed. I'm in favor of Hendrickson getting more money, but he can't have it both ways.

It helped Palmer and Dunlap.
Palmer got a 2nd Team AP, 2nd place MVP vote, won a playoff game. (Also $90m post-Bengals)
Dunlap went to the playoffs while we went 4-11-1, and later won a SB.
Playing stubborn has worked. You just have to commit to it. What's his alternative? Play 2025 vastly underpaid with no future guarantee, get franchise tagged to be vastly underpaid again with still no future guarantee, and then MAYBE hit FA as a 33-year-old and lose ~$50m with the time passed and no longer having the value of back-to-back 17.5 sack seasons?

You're getting irked for no reason then. Or at least the wrong reason.
The Bengals had both Zack Moss and Geno Stone take paycuts this offseason.
The Bengals had Joe Mixon take a paycut last offseason.
That's not counting the folks they cut under contract. If anyone is wanting it both ways, it's the Bengals FO. Pay less for guys who underperform, underpay for guys who overperform.

I don't have the data handy, I posted it before here, but essentially the decline of pass rushers post 30 is about as sure of a thing as you can bet on outside of HB's. Usually the elite guys will have one more elite year (at some points over the span of that contract not necessarily 1st year) then a mix bag of injuries and awful years, but usually both. I mean look at Dunlap and Atkins just in context of former Bengals, they fell into that trend themselves. It's not just them it's actually almost all of the biggest pass rushers of the last 10 years or so with a couple exceptions. Maybe Trey is that exception, but if he isn't the downside is pretty devastating.
The reality is the Bengals probably have already gotten the best years out of Trey. They are trying to limit their exposure in the decline and it's not wrong it's just uncomfortable. Us having nothing outside of him doesn't mean he still won't most likely decline quickly in the lifespan of this contract. You can't let one bad situation compound into another, that's just throwing good money after bad.

Would any team in the NFL pay $30+MM for a DE who is over 30 and just started playing the best football of his career? No.
I think the Bengals are a cheap, poorly run franchise (mostly), but I honestly don't blame them here.

Answering the questions in front of an ongoing practice in the manner he is, is a rather douche move but I'm sure his agent told him to do that. If he sits out (which won't happen), I hope the Bengals tag him in 2026. I'm not anti-Trey. He's an important cog to the defense but I truly believe the defense would manage without him especially with Golden running the show.

Trey deserves to get paid but the Bengals don't want to pay long term because it's clear most DEs fall off at 30. Best case he might get double digit sacks at age 32.
I feel like the Bengals are correct for trying to do a short term (2-3 year) extension.
