Again the draft picks won't cost $5 mil when you are starting out with a top 51 calculation. The only pick that makes significantly more than the salary slot they are replacing is the #1. The 2nd makes roughly what a guy like Brightwell makes ($1.1 mil) and he will be cut. Once you get to day 3 picks, they make less. Outside of Rd1, it is a wash. And that is assuming no oicks replace a higher sakary guy (Stone, Pratt, McPherson, Volson, etc). RE: The 2025 Bengals Rosters Thread: Coaches & Players - Isaac Curtis: The Real #85 - 03-21-2025 Trent Brown to Texans. 1 year, $3 mil. N/I Patrick deal. Tee at $24.1, Slaton at $5.4. Spotrac, top 51: $20.5 mil. Tee at $26.6, Slaton at $7.9. N/I Patrick. My calculations, based on a best available roster of: O starters (11): Burrow; C.Brown; Chase, Higgins, Iosivas; D. Sample; OBJ, Volson, Karras, Patrick, Mims. D starters (11): Hendrickson, BJ Hill, Slaton, Ossai; L. Wilson, Pratt; CTB, Turner, D. Hill; Battle, Stone. Wilson; Anthony, Anderson. -------------------- That's 54 guys with All on IR as the 54th. I get $20.8 mil in cap with that, using OTC's numbers. Take out $3-4$ mil for the PS and a net of $2 mil for the 1st rounder and we are at $15 mil or thereabouts. No Trey getting paid, no other FA's, no cushion. $15 mil. Now, that vould certainly go up some. We won't oay Moss $4.8 mil to be RB3, right? Cutting him save $3.3 mil, but then a cheap replacements eats a mil, so +$2.3 for $17.3. The rest of the picks will be a wash or a slight savings. I am working with $17.3 in my head. Pay Trey. And MAYBE one more value FA signing (G, or cheap vet on D). Unless we get a Burrow restructure (+$19 mil) or release some other guys depending on draft/FA signings (Volson, Pratt, Stone, Burton) that is the number. But as of this moment, he's a starter for me, with Ford as OT3/G4. Volson has close to zero dead cap. Cutting him saves $3.6 mil. RG Will Hernandez is valued at just over $4 mil per by spotrac. He's 29. Coming off an ACL tear early last year. But with decent tongood grades the last couple years. If we sign him to a multi-year deal, the cap hit should be right around $4 mil. At that point, Hernandez & Patrick are your starters. Volson at $3.8 mil is an expensive G3 with no positional versatility. Cutting Volson would pay for Hernandez, almost. Draft a guard to either start over Patrick (early) or compete with Kirkland/Lee/Stueber/Ford to be G3 (later). I am not down on Volson, necessarily. I just think there is a path where cutting him can pay for an OG signing/upgrade, pay Trey, AND perhaps have enough for a bargain FA signing on D. But unless it is a REAL bargain (Campbell, Simmons), then probably a draft pick has to allow us to cut Stone or Pratt to finance an impactful acquisition (Smith, Blackmon, Gillmore). RE: The 2025 Bengals Rosters Thread: Coaches & Players - Isaac Curtis: The Real #85 - 04-09-2025 The Bengals have (re) signed FA LB Joe Giles-Harris, who was briefly on our PS last year before being signed away by Jacksonville. 1 year deal. https://www.yardbarker.com/nfl/articles/cincinnati_bengals_sign_linebacker_joe_giles_harris_to_one_year_contract/s1_16652_42026314 Looks like a camp/PS guy or a guy to compete with Njongmeta & Heyward for LB4/LB5. No PS level guys now that the Steelers poached Davis. On only 4 on the 53 level. I didn't realize they didn't have any on the PS now. We may very well see one drafted before or by Rd 4, another drafted Rd 5 or 6 who goes to the PS. And likely at least one UDFA who would compete for PS. They have typically liked to carry 5 on the 53 and 1-2 on the PS. I've personally always felt like 5 on the 53 was a bit overkill though. You think 5 is overkill? We generally play 4 every game. If one guy gets hurt, you need a replacement on the roster. With 2 guys who are more NT types and 2 who are more DT/3T types and guy or two who can switch back & forth (Hill). Or maybe an end who can play some 3T for more cover (Sample). Plus, we had a ton of injuries there last year. I doubtcwe go light at DT. Butcthere are guys who can play some DT and some edge: Robinson, Burch, etc. We could snag one in the draft RE: The 2025 Bengals Rosters Thread: Coaches & Players - ochocincos - 04-16-2025 (04-16-2025, 02:54 PM)Isaac Curtis: The Real #85 Wrote: You think 5 is overkill? Maybe I'm more old school, but I think of the late 2000's and early 2010's when Bengals ran out there with Atkins, Peko, Sims, and typically one other dude officially as DTs, but then they had a nickel DT like Rucker or Fanene that helped boost pass rush but play base DE as well. And those DTs like Peko are being subbed out for the nickel DT while the UT like Atkins is playing a heavy majority of snaps. I still think that model can work, if they can get a DT who can play that much and do it well like Atkins did. You mention Sample, which I always thought would fit well in a Rucker/Fanene role, but they haven't seemed to really try it (or maybe he's been so frequently injured I haven't noticed them trying when he was in there). In those days, we were playing a 43 defense and carrying like 6-7 LBs on the roster. Plus 2 FBs. Now? I'd be shocked if we carry only 4 DTs. Frankly, I think 6 is more likely. However, like you, I am kinda old school. I do long for a FB and some OLB types. If so, we have to cut somewhere. Personally, I'd go with fewer TEs (4 not 5) and fewer WRs 5 not 6). But that is just me. Having some 2 way TEs would free up a roster spot. Now we need a blocking TE + his backup (Sample + Grandy) and a receiving TE + his backup (Gesicki + Hudson). All waa our all around. IDK what the point of McLachlan is. Have the 6th LB be one who can rush the passer more if they really want to have that extra rusher. |
