Jeeze, I last checked in when Abbott was at 4 innings and 1 run.

Red's are hard to watch at this point.

RE: Reds June 2025 Thread - ochocincos - 06-05-2025

Reds simply did not do enough and/or brought in poor additions in the offseason.
Or maybe it's they haven't cut the cord on certain existing guys yet.
I get real nervous any time Ashcraft, Gibaut, or Barlow comes into the game.
Just when you thought the Reds were coming along with their bats, they're cool again to start June.
If the goal from the club is to have guys just hit line drives and get on base and less caring about power, they didn't bring in the proper hitters for that.
Too many of their guys are batting sub-.250, and they really need a few guys batting .270+ if they don't care about power.

My worry is this is a make-or-break month for the Reds.
They too often falter after the ASB, so they need to get back within 1-2 games of the WC, or really be in one of the WC spots come ASB.

I'll be keeping my FDSN monthly sub for this month and next, but come August if they aren't close to contention, I might save that $20/month since it will be getting back into football preseason.

Arizona scored 7 runs in the top of the 9th today to beat Atlanta 11-10. They are going to be on cloud 9 this weekend against the Reds.

RE: Reds June 2025 Thread - ochocincos - 06-06-2025

The rest of June has the following teams (record):
AZ (31-31)
@CLE (33-28)
@DET (41-23)
MIN (34-28)
@STL (34-28)
NYY (38-23)
SD (35-26)
@BOS (30-34)

The Reds have to play all .500 or better teams for the next 3+ weeks until finally Boston on 6/30, 7/1, 7/2.

It's an incredibly difficult stretch and can really either help show the Reds are on the path to the postseason (likely WC if at all) or really in the hole come the ASB.
Luckily the last week before the ASB is 4 games against the Marlins (23-37) and Rockies (12-50) all at GABP, which should help shrink any hole the team might be in by then. And if they up above .500 after this terrible stretch, it could really elevate them into the WC by the ASB.

Reds did Wynns dirty.

7 PA in the entire month of May and 0 in June. Just sitting on his rights, not letting him play and not letting him sign elsewhere, cutting into what he'll be able to make in Arbitration next year.

Yep. He's earned his big league paycheck, but let the man hit. I don't care if they feel that Stephenson is their future catcher . . . Wynns is better right now.

RE: Reds June 2025 Thread - samhain - 06-06-2025

I've seen some podcasts where the idea of Francona being one and done is becoming a discussion. Seems like an unlikely outcome, but it would be a major embarrassment for the organization if it happened. He does seem incredibly frustrated and snippy in his dealings with the media, and IMO he's one of the nicer guys in the game.

IMO, he needs to give ownership an ultimatum. Spend a little more money or find another manager.

With the potential of a lockout on the horizon, I could see him looking at this season and being ready to go back to retirement life. I wouldn't blame him a bit.

I'd be shocked if they restart this tonight.

Officially suspended. Flash flood warning being issued probably sealed it. Game resumes at 2:10. Original game tomorrow will start 40 minutes after but no earlier than the 4:10 original start time.

YUP

These next 3 weeks are going to go a long way towards telling us what this team is or isn't?

If you look at total payroll allocations, the Reds are a little over $45m from 15th.

They don't even need to spend top-10 money ($83m from 10th)... but it's easy to see a potential future where if they had spent enough to get to the middle of the pack they would be in one of the wildcard spots right now.

Hyesong Kim: 3yr/$12.5m (+$2.5m to his former team)
Paul Goldschmidt: 1yr/$12.5m
Pete Alonso: 1yr/$30m
Alex Bregman: 3yr/$120m (really 1yr/$36.6m with player opt outs after and a ton deferred if he doesn't)

Totally agree.  Nobody paying attention expects them to go on a NY/LA spending spree.  Just get to 150 and act semi-serious.

Heck, I can even see a (weak) excuse for spending at typical Castellini levels in years when they are rebuilding/obviously bad.

2025 is in the wheelhouse of when all of the Reds prospect capital is allegedly maturing.  Like the Bengals in the Burrow window, the time to spend in FA is now.  Evaluate the guys you developed internally, then fill the holes from the outside.

They don't exactly spend well, either.  As I've said, I think Martinez is terrific, but 20m for him is a hell of a lot on a team with the holes that this one has.  I think that his acceptance of that deal basically forced them to pronounce their offseason dead as soon as it happened.  You could nip and tuck around the payroll at level that they are near right now and find 25-30m for a good bat with that 20m.  Pitching is a strength with or without Martinez.  The lineup is not.

The bones of a good roster are there, they just refuse to complete the task of filing it out.

The Candelario contract, 3 years/45 million fully guaranteed has just been a disaster. Still have 1 more year on it...

Year one, he batted .225 with a negative .71 WAR
This year, he's batted .112 with a .87 WAR

I remember that search being flawed from the very beginning. They had the contract that they wanted to give already set in their minds and then went out to find a player who would say yes to it rather than going out to try to find a good player and seeing what contract they could live with.
