I though that Burton showed some good courage and nifty moves on that 3rd Qtr punt return.

On another note, is it too soon to sound the alarm on Lucas Patrick?

RE: The Good, Bad, and Fugly; Preseason Game 1 - Luvnit2 - 08-08-2025

The starting OL looked good other than Patrick who had penalty and was beat quickly on a pass play. But, they were against the Eagles 2nd team DL so I take it with. grain of salt. The CB's did not cover anyone all night. Hudson was a beast. Not bad for our 4th best TE. Burrow was awseome as was Chase. Charlie Jones looks like 4th best WR and someone who can contribute more than he did in the past.

Burton had a great punt return, but nothing as a receiver. The other young receivers did not show an ability to get open and when they did Browning (played horriby) and Ridder (not accurate all night) missed them. The backup OL struggled. Our defense was horrible against the Eagles 2nd string offense. That was the most disappointing. Knight and Carter missed tackles and seemed hesitant. Turner was torched, but Ivey was the worst CB all nghtt. Rivers got beat playig LT bad.

Stewart showed up a couple of plays, but was not consistent. Brooks showed some toughness including a nice one on one tackle on a Kick off return.

Overall, our 1st team offense dominated their 2nd team defense. Our second and 3rd team offense was dominated. Our 1st team defense was dominated by their 2nd team offense which was disappointing.

Good news it is preseason and Golden got the chance to see our shortcomings.

Fairchild was a bright spot to me, he played well I thought, but I look foreward to our OL experts in here opinion on him and the entire OL.

JB was hit one time on a blitz that he threw a TD pass to Chase.I forgot our 2nd year DT's Jenkins and Jackson both played very well. Jenkins was the most active DL for us I saw last night both against the run and pass. Jackson dominated albeit aginst ther 3rd and 4th string, but he played with heart.

No it is not to early to be concerned with RG, he got beat early on a pass play.. I will say the penalty for a chop block was questionable. Also, I did not think Ford looked good either.

I hope our FO gets proactive, they need to go after Risner, but does Risner play LG or RG?  Maybe that is the concern if he played mostly LG.

I agree.   That was an outstanding and tough return.  I was disappointed in how few other players rallied to him after that.   I get the idea that he is treated like an outsider on the team.   I know Burrow and Chase historically have reached out to him.   But after that amazing run I was disappointed in the lack of support for him

I don't think it's too soon.   I thought the right guard spot was weak against backups last night - both Patrick and Ford.   Why we didn't sign a free agent guard in the first place is a mystery to me.

Glad Ossai is still injury-free, every time I hear his name, he is injured.

RE: The Good, Bad, and Fugly; Preseason Game 1 - BoomerFan - 08-08-2025

On the one hand you could argue that while the 1s were in, we were ahead 14 to 10. However, Jalen Hurts was never in so really our defense never faced the toughest version of the Eagles offense.

Anyways, it was bad. Our 2nd team offense was bad. And all of our defense was bad. Bad pass rush. Bad coverage. Bad run stopping. Eagles WRs were getting separation from our guys. Browning was incredibly inaccurate and stared down his targets. Ridder was better but not that much better.

Situational football (giving up points and big returns at half)
Rookie Defenders outside of Barrett sack.

The fugly
Browning

I would definitely put stupid penalties in there.

Last year, it was the offense that came out of camp thinking they were one of the best, only to be unable to score against NE. So far this year, all the news articles are about how the DBs are shutting down Chase, Higgins, etc., and they won't face anyone better in the regular season. This game was a reality check for them, and I think they needed it. We'll see if they're better against the Redskins.
I fell asleep right after the LB intercepted the ball and ran it back for the touchdown, and didn't see the results of the review. Was he touched down, or was it a pick 6?

Tough to tell much. But this I know 1000% they are super vanilla on defense. We’ll see the pass coverage has little to do with scheme. It was bad.

Good point, we lost 10 points on 2 stupid penalties, one they got a TD versus a FG and other a FG versus a stop.

Ivey had a very night, could not cover and lined up offsides on a FG that they missed. The they got 1st down and a TD on drive.

RE: The Good, Bad, and Fugly; Preseason Game 1 - PhilHos - 08-08-2025

Defense was predictably atrocious HOWEVER, we did miss some key players AND most coordinators do not gameplan for their opponent in the preseason, so like some of you, I'm still hopeful that it won't look THIS bad in the regular season.

I don't know, refs were pretty bad last night (i stopped watching at the end of the 3rd quarter). Murphy was CLEARLY being held on a play and no flag was thrown, for example.

Chargers losing Slater at practice was brutal. Done for the year. Man will have a Brinks truck of money to make him feel better, though.

RE: The Good, Bad, and Fugly; Preseason Game 1 - Millhouse - 08-08-2025

In a nutshell, it's basically the same team I saw in the second half last season. First team offense on fire, and the defense in the mud BUT with the oline blocking solid(even against the 2s). And just like last year, no where for the defense to go but up.

RE: The Good, Bad, and Fugly; Preseason Game 1 - Clark W Griswold - 08-08-2025

Not much good to take away.
We can only hope the defense somehow rises to a mediocre level. There was so much bad vs 2nd and 3rd stringers that I think this defense’s ceiling is somewhere around 20th best.

Also, if they didn’t see the need for Trey before it should be crystal clear now. Murphy was his usual non-factor self and Stewart will hopefully improve with time but he has a long way to go. Ossai/Sample and the others are who they are. Decent back ups but not impactful players.

Offense looked the way they should vs back ups.
Unfortunately, the 2025 Bengals looked just like the 2024 Bengals - Burrow and Chase have to play like Hall of Famers for them to even have a chance at winning.

Don't forget their big punt return that led to a TD atcthe end of half and Brightwell's return being called back. That is likely 3 ooints we didn't get and they were likely looking FG at best and gotca TD instead.

I gave Burton a lot of grief last year, and justly deserved. Now that he's appearing to be all in on being a part of the team, I also feel like that is something to be spoken up about. And yes, it is puzzling as to why the Bengals went the bargain basement route at Guard in free agency.

Not sure how you don;t have Hudson in there as the good with a stat line of 6 catches for 62 and 2 Tds...

RE: The Good, Bad, and Fugly; Preseason Game 1 - jj22 - 08-08-2025

Missed an injury (we jinxed it). Sounds like Stone went down after only 4 snaps. I thought i saw him on the sidelines after half in street clothes so hopefully nothing serious.

This only highlights the poor job the FO did on revamping this defense and not establishing any depth outside of the LB room...

Losing a starting safety is significant given the room isn't strong to begin with.

They showed nothing last year. Or the year before. Golden is gonna fix it! I have a feeling it’s going to be a loooooong season, and another year wasted.
