He was the main DL that Offenses tried to take away on that A&M Defense. I hope I'm wrong. I was wrong about Josh Allen, as he ended up a pretty damn QB. It did take him until Year 3 though, but he got there. Hopefully Stewart not only comes into his own, but hopefully it doesn't take him multiple years to get there. I understand Stewart is a mid first round pick and many fans think that means he has to be great in year one (not you), but it is more common than not it takes rookies 2 to 3 years to peak minimum. The question we don't know yet is what will Stewart's peak be? Knight? Fairchild? Rivers? Brooks? Carter? With Shemar, he only needs to be better than Sam this year, not a high bar. I think he will be much better and will surprise a lot that hated the pick. Might not get the sacks, because he has problems tackling the QB once he gets there, but he will get TFL's, pass deflections, hits, pressures etc. (08-01-2025, 12:33 PM)Luvnit2 Wrote: I understand Stewart is a mid first round pick and many fans think that means he has to be great in year one (not you), but it is more common than not it takes rookies 2 to 3 years to peak minimum. If Montgomery can teach him to pace himself and try and be fundamental and tackle once he gets to the QB or RB look out. As I watched him, I think at a minimum he is going to make OL uncomfortable trying to block him. I also think he may surprise a lot of fans who hated the pick. That is what I see at the very least as a rookie, a disruptive force on the other side of Trey, he will struggle, probably by over pursuing and missing tackles here and there. We should expect this just to harness our expectations, but he will be disruptive and not easy to handle like Sam was last year for the most part. Sure, that's a bar, but my main concern is pass rush apart from Hendrickson in general. If Ossai can cover that and get 7+ sacks himself (more what Hubbard usually got around during his better years), then Stewart can take more time and that's fine. If Ossai flounders or gets hurt, the Bengals will need someone to carry that load. Bengals might need both Ossai and either Murphy or Stewart if Hendrickson doesn't play some games. I'm very nervous about Stewart's readiness to contribute in the passing game, and same with Murphy. Expecting a big year from Ossai especially on 3rd downs rushing from the inside. One of my bold predictions is Ossai has more sacks than Trey this year. Also think Murphy will show some of why he was a 1st round pick this year, have heard some good things about Murphy which is nice to hear after his terrible sophomore showing. Stewart will be a better pass rusher than Sam, it is just the finishing part that is the big concern, but if others get the sack it's all good IMO. I figured with Ossai being a former LB and smaller than Murphy and Stewart, Ossai would remain outside opposite Hendrickson with one of the bigger DEs (Murphy, Stewart, or Sample) swinging inside. Been seeing Ossai rushing on the inside already, beat Fairchild pretty good. That is what is nice about both Stewart and Ossai, they can alternate and be used in different ways. Ossai is smaller, but damn he is so quick he makes Guards look bad. Stewart is more of the power that can move inside if needed. Really liking what Montgomery is doing, Zac has said so himself that he has loved what he has seen from Montgomery. I was never impressed with Hobby and how he taught the DL here. |
